Hiking with Little Kids: 6 Things You Need to Know

My husband and I love hiking, and we used to hike a lot before we had our son. Nothing extreme, but we hiked a lot of trails in many states. I remember our last hike was in Vancouver when I was eight months pregnant with my son. We did the stairs and suspension bridge. It was a blast. We had always imagined all the hikes that we would have with our little son. However, I was stroked by a surprise C-section, followed by the pandemic. We had to stay in for almost two years. It worked out for me in terms of recovering from my surgery, but we felt very captive.

As soon as things got easier, we went on our first hike with our son, who was about 18 months old at the time. Even though we managed to finish the short 1-mile trail, it was nothing like we imagined. It was pretty challenging, but I guessed we didn’t prepare enough. We have learned it the hard way and are much better at it now. That said, I would like to share with you 6 things you need to know when hiking with your little kids.

6 Things You Need to Know When Hiking with Kids

Be prepared

When hitting the trail, make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks. It will help keep your little kids stay hydrated and energized throughout the journey. Then, appropriate hiking gear, like a sturdy carrier, comfortable clothes, and suitable shoes, will ensure your kids’ safety and enjoyment. Lastly, don’t forget hats and sunscreen to protect yourself and your little ones from the sun.

Start small

Begin with short and easy trails to help familiarize your kids with the outdoor experience. It is important not to push them beyond their capabilities. Doing so will lead to a negative experience, making them reluctant to hike in the future.

Have low expectation

It’s crucial to remember to lower your expectation when it comes to hiking with little kids. Setting realistic expectations helps to minimize disappointment and frustration for you and your little kids. It is more important to understand their limitations and provide the necessary support. Remember that hiking with kids is about enjoying nature and spending quality time together, not conquering the most challenging trails.

Take breaks

Don’t forget to take breaks as needed. Breaks allow your children to rest and recharge their energy for a more enjoyable and positive outdoor experience. Shady spots along the trails are perfect for a water break. You can also stop by the streams for a fun soaking experience. Embrace the opportunity to appreciate the environment and create unforgettable memories together. Completing the trail is not a must!

Have on-the-hike game

Incorporating on-the-hike games can boost the fun and add extra motivation when hiking with kids. A scavenger hunt is a perfect hiking game. Your kids can seek specific objects and animals along the trail. The game helps to turn the hike into an interactive adventure and keep your kids engaged through the trail.

Pick well-oriented trails

Choosing trails that are well-oriented and kid-friendly when hiking with your little ones is crucial.  Opt for trails that have well-defined pathways and clear signage. Avoid overly challenging or rugged trails that may be overwhelming and unsafe. Selecting the correct trails will help build your kids’ interest and confidence.

Conclusion

Hiking with little kids may be challenging, but it can transform into a rewarding and enjoyable family activity with perseverance. Once you overcome the initial struggles, hiking will become an opportunity to create a cherished family tradition. Comment to let me know your favorite trails! Remember to share with friends and family as well.
